The FY 2009 CNLS Colloquium series is in progress and CNLS is scheduling speakers for this fiscal year (2009) and next. The organizing committee includes Luis Bettencourt (T-5), Robert Ecke (T-CNLS), Vadas Gintautas (T-5), Cristiano Nisoli (T-4), Razvan Teodorescu (T-4), Eddy Timmermans (T-CNLS), and Ming Zhang (T-6). We host speakers who are outstanding scientists with a broad vision of their field and capable of delivering a comprehensive lecture addressing an audience with multi-disciplinary scientific interests; both experimentalists and theoreticians. Selected speakers will dedicate some amount of their time during the visit (including a postdoc lunch) for meeting with CNLS postdocs and affiliated staff scientists. The research interests of the nominee will cover, but will not be limited to, the fields of particular CNLS activity such as statistical physics and complex systems, fluid dynamics, optics and spectroscopy, condensed matter, chemical physics, biological physics, and applied math.

If you have a nomination for a speaker, please contact the committee via email at cnls_colloq@cnls.lanl.gov.

Guidelines for CNLS Colloquium
The CNLS Colloquium series is designed to engage a diverse set of student, postdoctoral and staff scientists with quite different backgrounds including physics, chemistry, biology, applied mathematics, and information theory. This audience is broader than what one would expect for a departmental colloquium at a university. Speakers need to communicate the importance of their work and its basic foundations in a language accessible at a general advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student level. Speakers should not assume that because CNLS has historically been interested in a particular topic, e.g., solitons or nonlinear dynamics, that the audience will be experts in that topic - CNLS research areas are continually changing and CNLS postdocs come from very different backgrounds. These guidelines do not preclude a more technical core to the talk for the more knowledgeable members of the audience but a clear 10-15 minute introduction and a 5 minute summary of the main results of the research should be included as part of a CNLS colloquium.

All colloquium are held on Monday at 3:00-4:00pm. Coffee is served at 2:30.
