Colloquium

Black-Holes, Neutron-Stars, Numerical Relativity and the Birth of Gravitational Wave Astronomy

Gravitational wave astronomy has arrived with the detection of gravitational waves emitted by black-hole and neutron-star binary systems. This was the culmination of a colossal scientific and engineering effort. In parallel to this effort, the numerical relativity community worked on figuring out what to expect. I will give a general overview of recent observations of gravitational waves and discuss the role that numerical relativity played in the prediction and characterizations of the sources. I will also present my views on the future of numerical relativity and its potential for producing unique tools for astronomical discoveries.
