The Entropy Rate and its fluctuations in Compressible Turbulence on a Free Surface

Mahesh Bandi
Univerity of Pittsburgh

The Entropy Production Rate is measured for a system of particles floating on the surface of a tank of water maintained in a turbulent steady state. The measurements are compared with the recent theoretical work of G. Falkovich and A. Fouxon. Fluctuations in the local entropy current are also measured in the lagrangian frame for individual particle trajectories. The probability distribution of local entropy current permits a test of the Steady State Fluctuation Theorem of Cohen and Gallavotti.
