Laser Physics in an Adaptive-Mesh-Refinement Hydrodynamics Code

Integration of laser physics into an adapative-mesh-refinement (AMR) hydrodynamics code (hydrocode) is a means to develop predictive capability for situations with laser-material interactions, especially laser-plasma interactions. These include inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments, such as those to be conducted at the National Ignition Facility (NIF.)

We are in the process of adding laser physics to the forthcoming AMR hydrocode cassio via raytracing. Our ultimate goal is validation of cassio for use in the simulation of NIF-type ICF experiments.

This talk will discuss the basic physics of a laser ray in a plasma, including derivations of the fundamental equations from first principles. A number of issues that arise when implementing those physics in a code will be touched upon and our resolutions of those issues outlined. Model problems will be posed and interesting phenomena we hope to observe in them noted. Finally, the code's potential utility in simulation ICF experiments will be discussed.
