Pair Correlations in the 1D Bose gas

In this talk I will give an introduction to the concept of correlation functions in quantum many-body systems. I will briefly discuss some of the pioneering work of Glauber in the field of quantum optics and how these concepts have recently evolved in the field of ultra-cold atomic physics. Then I will look specifically at the example of a uniform 1D Bose gas, and describe how one can obtain quantitative predictions for the pair correlation function of an interacting system in this case[1]. Finally I will take a step back and consider what physics these pair correlations are telling us (and what they are not telling us!). [1] arxiv:0710.5812
