Maintaining integrity of the genetic material is achieved through deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair, a process in which damage and decay caused by external agents and by metabolites from cellular processes are continually monitored and corrected. Genetic error correction involves many layers of molecular interactions, including gene interactions. This tutorial talk will give a theoretical framework for rigorous treatment of genetic error correction, or more specifically, for understanding error correction mechanisms quantitatively and algorithmically. Basic biological mechanisms in the gene regulation that constitute the basis of our model will be explained and their relation to probabilistic graphical models and distributed error correction algorithms in man made error correcting systems.
