Are turbulence and critical phenomena analogous to one another? I demonstrate the connection, introducing the concept of roughness-induced criticality, and analyze friction factor data for turbulent rough-pipe flows, taken by Nikuradze in 1933. These data can be interpreted using a momentum-transfer theory due to Gioia and Chakraborty and extended to two-dimensional (2D) turbulent soap film flows. I present the results of direct numerical simulations in 2D which show strong confirmation of both roughness-induced criticality and the momentum-transfer predictions for the friction factor.
