The Centre for Polar Modelling and Observation (CPOM) has been developing a coupled regional sea ice-ocean model of the Arctic by coupling the NEMO/OPA ocean model to the LANL CICE sea ice model. Here we describe the progress in this project. The technical aspects of setting up the new configuration are described and model results, especially northward flow of water and heat through the Fram Strait and the Atlantic layer waters in the Arctic, are discussed. We also describe work done improving the formulation of basal sea ice ablation in sea ice models as well as work producing a physically based melt pond model suitable for Global Climate Models.
