Complexity in Granular Materials

Bob Behringer
Duke University

Granular materials appear all around us. Yet, there is no established picture of something as simple as how granular materials transition between fluid-like and solid-like states, a process known as jamming. Jamming occurs in a number of other systems; hence, the nature of jamming has become a question of broad interest. In addition, granular materials show complex grain-scale behavior, including complex diffusive processes. Forces are carried on complex networks call force chains, and the properties of these chains is likely crucial to the rich structure evidenced in dense granular systems. This talk will review recent work in the field using a series of experiments to highlight key granular properties.
