Operations Research in the Baghdad Southern Belt

Matthew Hanson
Leonie Industries, LLC.

As part of a trial program sponsored by the U.S. Joint IED Defeat Organization, civilian quantitative experts are being embedded as staff members in Army brigades and Marine Corps regiments deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan in order to provide statistical analysis, optimization, and modeling and simulation capabilities directly to units conducting counterinsurgency operations. I will discuss my own experiences as an operations research analyst in Iraq from August 2008-February 2010, providing examples of the kinds of problems studied and a number of the methods used.

Host: Alexander Gutfraind
