First, what determines the scale and magnitude of the eddying flow? Second, how can we parameterize the eddies? For this I will discuss a variant of the venerable GM scheme that takes into account some effects of geostrophic turbulence. Third, what is the effect of the large-scale circulation? For this I will present a new theory for the stratification of the deep ocean. Host: Bob Ecke, T-CNLS
