Seminar

Time-dependent Study on Ultrafast Atomic Physics and MCDF Calculations for Multi-electron Atomic Structure, T-1 Seminar

Shaohao Chen
Becker AMO Theory Group, JILA, University of Colorado

As the rapid development of laser technique, ultrashort intense laser pulses have been used to explore and control a lot of quantum processes in atoms and molecules. In this talk, I will report my recent works on the ultrafast atomic physics based on solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. Two examples will be shown: (1) double ionization of He atom by intense near-infrared and VUV pulses; (2) few-photon coherent control for excitation and ionization of atoms. On the other hand, there are active interests and broad applications of the calculations for multi-electron atomic structure. As an example, I will report my works on the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations for the energy levels and radiation transition rates of OII and its application in astrophysics. Finally, I will combine the two topics of ultrafast laser-atom physics and multi-electron atomic structure, and come to a new exciting topic, i.e. multi-electron atoms interacting with ultrashort laser pulses, which is nowadays a great challenge for numerical computations. I will give a brief overview for computational methods as well as some interesting problems.
