Backreaction of Hawking radiation on black hole dynamics in a moving mirror analog

In 1975 Stephen Hawking showed that black holes evaporate. A consequence of this evaporation is the so-called black hole information loss paradox where information about a system which has fallen into the hole is lost forever. If information is truly lost the laws of quantum physics may need to be reexamined. There are many proposals to resolve this controversy. One approach is to account for backreaction of the emitted radiation on the hole, much like radiation damping for an accelerated charged particle, which was neglected in the original calculation by Hawking. Under certain conditions a moving mirror can mimic the evaporation process, yet remains simple enough to solve. In this talk I’ll discuss ongoing work on a moving mirror model of Hawking evaporation which seeks to shed light upon the evaporation process by accounting for the backreaction of emitted radiation.
