An estimated 130–170 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis C (HCV), and over 34 million people live with HIV/AIDS. The two viruses share many features that make them highly variable and elusive to vaccine research. Their high mutation rate allows them to readily escape immune response from the host (the Red Queen Effect, after Lewis Carroll's character and famous quote). However, they also have distinct biological features. In this talk I will discuss viral growth and genetic diversity in acute HIV and HCV infections. I will describe a model initially developed to describe genetic diversity in HIV and show what we learned when we applied it to HCV instead. Host: Kipton Barros, T-4 and CNLS |
