Recent progress in nanofabrication has led to design of new optical materials with exotic properties such as negative index of refraction. These novel materials (meta-materials) which are constructed by embedding nanoscale structures in optical media open a broad range of opportunities for various applications in imaging, LIDAR and optical cloaking. Currently an important challenge is to understand the nonlinear properties of such materials. Nonlinearity in these materials can originate from the nonlinear properties of host materials or from nonlinearity of the embedded nanostructures. Nonlinear phenomena which are specific to materials with negative index of refraction will be discussed. The use of nonlinear properties for characterization, diagnosis, and light manipulations will be considered. Host: Andrei Piryatinski |
