Magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) is an emerging technology which can image matter down to nanometer length scales. It is conceivable that this technique could generate images right down to atomic length scales in the near future. In this talk I will give an introduction into the fundamental principles which govern MRFM. I will then derive a model of magnetic fluctuations in solid-state materials, and discuss how this model can help us understand data obtained from MRFM, as well as certain fundamental limitations of MRFM.
