A mathematical model of pulsed mRNA production in E. coli bacteria

Emanuel Salazar Cavazos
CNLS and CINVESTAV, Mexico

The characteristics and dynamics of messenger RNA (mRNA) production play an important role in expressed cell behavior. In E. coli bacteria, it has been observed that mRNA can be produced in pulses, with the consequence of significant fluctuations of the total number of mRNA molecules. We build a mathematical representation of a particular gene from E. coli to study the underlying mechanism of the mRNA pulses, the resulting dynamical behavior, and potential evolutionary benefits of pulsed mRNA production for the bacteria.
