Understanding of the differences between the physical principles governing the operation of macroscopic machines and molecular machines is leading to great progress in the design and construction of nanoscale devices that use chemical, electrical, mechanical, or light energy to carry out molecular tasks. The analysis here shows that an essential principle for designing nano-scale energy converters is the combination of a catalytic function with an allosteric sensing function to allow molecular motors to function as Brownian motors that use chemical information to do mechanical work.
