Radiative Shock Solutions with Grey Sn-transport

Jim M. Ferguson
Texas A&M University

This study describes a semi-analytic solution of planar radiating shock waves with a grey Sn- transport radiation model. The solution may be used to verify radiation hydrodynamic codes. Comparisons are made with the nonequilibrium diffusion solutions of Lowrie & Edwards. The so- lution also gives additional insight into the structure of radiating shocks. Previous work assumed that the Eddington factor was constant, taking on a value of 1/3, and that the radiation energy density was therefore monotonic. We explore the structure of the variable Eddington factor over the shocks spatial-domain, and show that in many cases the radiation energy density may have a local maximum under the Zel’dovich spike. We also study the relationship between the material and radiation temperatures relative to the final temperature, near an embedded hydrodynamic shock.
