Color centers in diamond consisting of a substitutional nitrogen and a vacancy have unique properties making them a sensor of choice for magnetic fields, electric fields, temperature, and rotations. They have also "sneaked" into the field of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The study of high-Tc superconductors is another area of application. Numerous groups work on NV centers; for what our group is up to, please see http://budker.berkeley.edu/. There is also a tutorial on NV centers and a short movie made by undergraduates that can be found there. Host: Dibyendu Roy |
