Bacterial growth in fluctuating environments

Edo Kussell
New York University

In this talk, I discuss experiments on bacteria growing in microfluidics devices in which cell divisions and growth rates can be measured in individual cells under continually fluctuating conditions. Cellular memory turns out to be an important component of population adaptation over fast and intermediate timescales. We analyze the molecular basis of two types of memory in E.coli sugar metabolism. We also examine the statistical properties of lineages of cells spanning many generations, and find signatures of selection within small populations.
