Positivity-preserving moment methods for Vlasov-Maxwell

Alec Johnson
KU Leuven

Simulation of violent plasma phenomena such as magnetic reconnection, shocks, and oscillations calls for robust, noiseless, and accurate kinetic methods. We outline a framework for solution of Vlasov-Maxwell that maintains positivity and stability. One variant of this framework is designed for Hermite polynomial expansion of the distribution function and maintains positivity merely of density and pressure; the other variant maintains pointwise positivity of the velocity distribution but requires numerical integration of velocity moments and sampling of the distribution in phase space. This framework uses semi-implicit time stepping and applies to fluid models and Vlasov solvers.
