MATHEMATICAL MODELING OF PERIFUSION CELL CULTURE EXPERIMENTS ON GNRH SIGNALING

Ezgi Temamogullari
Department of Mathematics at Duke University

Perifusion cell cultures are essential tools for studying pulsatile hormone stimulation. In these systems cells are immobilized in a chamber and the culture medium flows constantly over the cells. In this talk I will present a novel mathematical model consisting of coupled partial differential equations describing GnRH stimulated LH secretion in a perifusion cell culture. The model integrates intracellular signaling events with the movement of the substances down the cell chamber. It reproduces successfully experimental data sets from three different groups and gives insight into the biological mechanisms producing them. This is a joint work with Michael Reed and Fred Nijhout.
