The representation theory of the rotation group is applied to develop a series expansion of the correlation tensor in homogeneous anisotropic turbulence. Substituting this series in the equations for mean flow couplings gives a hierarchy of differential equations describing the linear part of the evolution of the Reynolds stress tensor. This approach has two important features: it is possible to estimate the error made in any finite truncation of the hierarchy, and it is possible to improve any truncated model systematically. This approach to the problem will be contrasted with traditional modeling methods based on continuum-mechanical analogies in which these two features are absent. Host: Susan Kurien |
