In this work, we propose a mixed-integer optimization model to design a minimum cost off-grid microgrid considering N-1 security, unit commitment and 3-phase unbalanced AC power flow constraints for radial networks. Off-grid microgrids in remote communities pose a significant challenge for achieving self sustainability as one needs to have sufficient backup generators or energy storage to account for the loss of an asset. Therefore, we consider a wide range of design options of selecting generators such as diesel generators, wind generation systems, hydro power plants, PV and batteries along with invertors in various combinations. We discuss the challenges of the resulting optimization problem and different approaches to exploit its block diagonal structure, such as Dual Decomposition or Benders' Decomposition.
