Contemporary software development and operations practices are as many and varied as the number organizations that claim to practice them. What they have in common is that they all strive to reach a common goal: to recognize the nonlinear nature of writing and operating software and attempting, wherever possible, to minimize that nonlinear effect through a mix of technical and social solutions. In this talk, I will present some of these nonlinear effects on both the development and operations side. I will then discuss industry best practices for how to cope with them, which can serve as a starting point for an organization to develop their own process and best practices to best suit their composition and needs.
