Computational modeling in a virtual materials laboratory

Ulf Schiller
Clemson University

Computer simulation techniques have become standard tools in science and engineering that cross boundaries between traditional disciplines and help tackle challenging problems in, e.g., materials science or bio-medicine. Advanced computational techniques are arguably the key to attaining solutions to analytic problems that were previously intractable. The impressive development in computing power continues as exascale supercomputers are anticipated to emerge. In order to harvest this raw power for predictive science, however, we need computational models that capture essential details of physical, chemical, and biological processes with sufficient accuracy and fidelity. In this presentation, I will give an overview of some recent developments in multiscale modeling of soft matter, and I will discuss some of the challenges and opportunities in translating these techniques to applications in engineering and clinical domains.
