Rural Electric Systems and Grid Modernization

David Pinney
NRECA

Rural electric cooperatives serve the majority of the land mass of the United States of America. This large service territory, diverse environmental conditions, and consumer-owned economic structure lead to unique opportunities and challenges in grid modernization. This talk gives an overview of technology infrastructure, cost-benefit analysis approaches, and simulation tools that are in-use at these electric utilities. We will also discuss the research community these utilities have formed and advantages of working with smaller, non-profit utilities.
