A flow past random arrays of spherical particles has been the subject of several studies due to its wide range of applications such as snow avalanches and detonation simulations. Understanding the governing forces within these arrays is crucial for obtaining accurate particle-fluid force models used in large scale simulations. These models have to faithfully reflect the sub-grid interactions between the particles and the fluid phase. The models being used today assume an average force on all particles within the same array. In this talk, I will go over a novel model, the Pairwise Interaction Extended Point-particle (PIEP) model, which can systematically predict a unique force on a certain particle based on the particle’s unique location within the array.
