Skyrmions and Nuclei

Nicholas Manton
University of Cambridge

Skyrme proposed a field theory model of protons, neutrons and larger nuclei in which the building blocks are topological solitons in 3D -- Skyrmions -- each carrying one unit of baryon number. I will review recent progress on this proposal, and show examples of classical multi-Skyrmions with baryon numbers up to about 100. Quantization leads to proton and neutron states with spin half and, for example, a reasonable spectrum for the Carbon-12 nucleus. This includes the ground state band, and the Hoyle state together with its excitations.
