Quantum Lunch

Decoherence and quantum mechanics of composite objects with internal degrees of freedom

Fumika Suzuki
University of British Columbia

Unlike a single point particle, a composite object (e.g., composite quasiparticle, atom, molecule) interacting with external objects can exhibit complicated quantum behaviors. We discuss the effect of the correlation between the internal states and the motion of the center-of-mass of a composite object on its scattering with impurity and how the correlation can provide rich phenomena such as bound states in the continuum which can not be seen with a single point particle. Furthermore, the correlation is also responsible for the decoherence effect on the center-of-mass degrees of freedom of the object. As examples, we discuss the possible destruction of Anderson localization of the object due to its internal states and the application of those studies of decoherence to the analysis of the impact of internal degrees of freedom of atoms on the analog Hawking radiation in the analog gravity models.
