Exploring flexibility in district heating networks through demand-side management

Pauline Kergus
Lund University

As buildings space heating represents a large share of total energy use, thermal networks, i.e. district cooling or heating networks, would be able to increase the efficiency of the energy system in an economic way. Thanks to the natural inertia of heat exchanges, these networks can offer flexibility, and this feature should be explored through advanced control strategies in order to fulfill their potential of smart energy systems. Demand-side management control strategies, which consists in shaping the energy demand of consumers in order to perform peak shaving and valley filling, constitute a good candidate to explore building's inertia as a source of flexibility. In this work, a novel approach based on positive systems theory is proposed to design such a control strategy.
