CANCELLED - Adventures in understanding diffuse magnetized astrophysical plasmas

Almost the entire universe is composed of diffuse, magnetized plasmas, and understanding its behavior is crucial to understanding astrophysical phenomena on scales ranging from star and solar system formation through the evolution and regulation of galaxy clusters. It is challenging to understand plasma in these regimes, however - the systems containing these plasmas typically evolve on a wide range of temporal and spatial scales, observational probes that provide diagnostic information are both sparse and often challenging to interpret, and a single system can span a broad range of plasma regimes (from, e.g., strongly collisional to almost collisionless). In this talk I will present results from several large-scale computational efforts that my research group is leading, including the modeling of strongly magnetized turbulence, the self-regulation of the intracluster plasma in galaxy clusters from the supermassive black hole residing in their most massive galaxies (using exascale simulations on Frontier), and efforts to bring data science techniques to bear in models of multiscale plasma systems. I will also make connections between this work and terrestrial high energy density plasmas, and to potential collaborations that I might pursue at LANL if I were to visit as an Ulam Fellow.
