DYNAMICALLY ASSISTED TUNNELLING

Ralf Schutzhold
Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Germany

Although tunnelling is usually taught in the first lecture course on quantum mechanics, our understanding is stillfar from complete - especially in time-dependent scenarios. We consider the enhancement (or suppression) oftunnelling through a potential barrier by an additional time-dependent electric field. As a prominent example, weapply our findings to the enhancement of nuclear fusion by a x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) field.

Bio: Ralf Schutzhold is the director of the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Germany and full professor for Theoretical Physics at the Technische Universitat Dresden, Germany. Hisresearch focuses on exploring analogies between disparate domains, including fundamental phenomena such asHawking radiation, and experimental realms such as ion traps, cold atoms, graphene, and beyond.
