Synchronization of Scale-free Oscillator Networks

Takashi Nishikawa
Southern Methodist University

In a network of dynamical elements, one of the most fundamental issues concerns the relationship between the topology of the network connectivity and the collective dynamics of the system. In particular, a subject of recent interest is how the topology affects the synchronizability of an oscillator network. One property of the topology of real-world networks that seems ubiquitous is the scale-free property, characterized by the heterogeneous distribution of degrees described by a power-law. Here we focus on how the change in this heterogeneity in the network topology affects synchronizability. One surprising finding is that smaller networks (in terms of average network distance) do not necessarily synchronize better than bigger networks.
