Multi-Scale Interactions in Turbulent Flows

One of the most fundamental aspects of turbulent fluid flow is its continuum of scales with strong nonlinear interactions between them. The ``local cascade picture'' of turbulent transfer presupposes a primary interaction of each scale of motion with adjacent scales. There is, however, also expected to be significant coupling between rather well-separated scales. This is true, in particular, for two-dimensional cascades of energy and enstrophy. The mix of strong interactions both local and non-local in scale poses a challenge for the successful modeling of small-scale turbulent effects. The aim of the workshop is to bring together leading scientists in the field to discuss multi-scale phenomena in fluid turbulence. The workshop will focus on physical understanding of scale interactions in turbulent flows, subgrid modeling, multi-scale computing and hybrid methods and new experimental tools capable of probing multi-scale features of fluid turbulence.
