Chaos and Non-Linear Dynamics - Application to Electrical Power Distribution Systems

Bruce A. Mork
Michigan Technological University

The electrical power network has experienced disruption and damage since the 1930?s caused by ferroresonance. Application of chaos theory to better understand the ferroresonance phenomena offers the opportunity to improve distribution system design and to avoid severe power quality problems. The concepts and classification methods presented provide insight into the global behavior of ferroresonance and are an excellent example of chaotic behavior in a non-linear system.
