Passive scalar statistics in peripheral regions

Vladimir Lebedev
Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics, Moscow, Russia

I consider transport of the passive scalar inside the viscous sublayer formed in the near wall region of developed incompressible turbulence. Velocity in the sublayer is spatially smooth however fluctuating chaotically in time. In this situation the passive scalar transport is realized through jets injecting narrow “tongues” of the scalar from the peripheral region to the bulk. I show that the probability distribution of the tongues’ width is broad, characterized by the power like tail.
