SymbioSim: Leveraging Symbiotic Relationships Towards Scalable Network Emulation Experiments

Miguel Erazo
Florida International University / CCS-3

Considerable progress has been made in recent years in network testbed design to foster network innovations. Most recent efforts, such as GENI, strive to create a single collaborative and exploratory platform for future Internets. An alternative to GENI's federation, which aims at increasing the size of network experiments, is symbiotic simulation. A symbiotic system is defined as ³a close association between a simulator and a physical system which is beneficial to both of them².

We present SymbioSim, a system based on symbiotic relationships, and topology downscaling; which promises to become an alternative for network experimentation testbeds. Our system is built upon PrimoGENI and runs on top of the Emulab/ProtoGENI infrastructure. Initial validation experiments confirm the validity of our approach.
