GPU-accelerated volumetric lattice Boltzmann method for image-based computation fluid dynamics

Huidan (Whitney) Yu
Purdue School of Engineering and Technology

Mass-conserved volumetric lattice Boltzmann method (VLBM) was specially developed for numerically solving fluid dynamics in complex (arbitrary), rigid or moving, boundaries. The formulation of VLBM consists of three parts: (1) collision taking into account the momentum exchange between the willfully moving boundary and the flow; (2) streaming accompanying a volumetric bounce-back procedure in boundary cells; and (3) boundary-induced volumetric fluid migration moving the residual fluid particles into the flow domain when the boundary swipes over a boundary cell toward a solid cell. It has unique computational advantages to deal with image-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD), including the seamless connection between image processing and high efficient GPU parallel computing. This talk will include two parts: (1) the lattice Boltzmann method and its volumetric representation and (2) GPU-accelerated VLBM for image-based CFD.
