Front-capturing and front-tracking with adaptivity for gas dynamics simulations

Raaghav Ramani
CNLS/EES-16

I will discuss a PDE-based multiscale methodology for efficient and accurate simulations of dynamically evolving fronts in gas dynamics.  The simulation framework consists of four components: (1) an Eulerian front-capturing scheme for resolving large-scale structures; (2) a Lagrangian front-tracking scheme for capturing small-scale features; (3 )a smooth adaptive meshing strategy that concentrates computational resources in regions of interest; and (4) a multiscale flow decomposition that couples the large and small spatial scales of the problem.  I will present this methodology in the context of two model problems: a two-dimensional rising bubble, and shock formation and development from smooth compressive initial conditions.
